A passenger aboard the Norwegian Getaway operated by Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) died after he fell from a balcony on the ship late Sunday night, August 23, as reported by CruiseFever.
The Norwegian Getaway was on the final night of its three-night cruise from Miami to The Bahamas when the incident occurred. A passenger reported an emergency announcement was made over the ship’s PA system between 11:00 p.m. and midnight on Sunday.
One cruise passenger posted an image of the aftermath on TikTok and stated that a woman and her husband saw the man “heavily intoxicated and belligerent in the theater” shortly before the fall. The passenger continues, “He allegedly got into an altercation, swung at someone and fell because he was so drunk. An unknown guest helped him up and escorted him out of the theater shortly before the fall happened.”
Detectives from Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Homicide Bureau are investigating the incident and have called it an “unclassified death investigation,” according to the Miami Herald.
Norwegian Cruise Line said in a statement, “On the evening of August 23, a guest went over their balcony, falling on a lower deck. While our crew acted immediately to provide life sustaining measures, the guest did not survive. Our thoughts are with the guest’s family during this very difficult time.”
One of the first things that cruise lines like NCL do after a passenger goes overboard or falls and is injured is pull the guest’s onboard purchases. Cruise lines quickly determine how many alcoholic drinks were consumed with an eye toward determining whether the accident was caused by the consumption of alcohol.
No information has been released about the man’s identity. NCL has remained mum regarding the circumstances leading to the fall.
Earlier in April a 24-year-old woman died after falling from her balcony on the Carnival Firenze.
