Disappearance of George Smith IV - Six Years Later

This past week marked six years since George Allen Smith IV disappeared from Royal Caribbean’s Brilliance of the Seas.

Mr. Smith’s disappearance, and the manner in which Royal Caribbean chose to handle the incident, brought much needed attention to the cruise industry.  The events which followed Mr. Smith’s death led to five Congressional hearings into disappearances and crimes on cruise ships, culminating in the passage of the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act in 2010.

Our firm represented Mr. Smith’s wife, Jennifer Hagel.  She hired us to obtain answers to what George Smith - Cruise Disappearance happened to her husband and to seek compensation for his death.

Starting on Monday, I’ll publish an article each day about the facts and circumstances surrounding the ill fated cruise.

What happened on the night in question?  What did the cruise line do when Mr. Smith was discovered missing from the cruise ship once it had reached the port of Kusadasi Turkey the following morning?  Did Royal Caribbean voluntarily provide any information to the families of Mr. Smith and his bride Jennifer Hagel for the next several months?  What role did the media play in maintaining focus on the story?  What led the families to hire maritime lawyers?  How did the cruise line respond?

I’ll address these issues.  I’ll talk about hiring Dr. Henry Lee and bringing a team of forensic experts and detectives aboard the cruise ship to try and find answers.

How did the legal cases turn out?  What is the status of the FBI investigation today?

Most importantly, has there been justice for George Smith?

This is to the bar tender that wrote te last comment . Please do the right thing and give any information you have to the FBI . It's te right thing to do and not only good for the family but good for your soul. I don't know about you, but it would haunt me like An ever increasingly heavy weight on my soull, for the rest of my life, to know I was with holding information for so long that could possibly help this family have some closure ad put them out of their torment. Not to smention, finally has justice served to what sounds like some cold heartless monsters that show no remorse for the life ttey most likely took. I honestly don't understand why you have not come forward. Who do you think you are protecting and why?
I hope after all these years, you do the right thing and come forward. It sounds like you want to otherwise you would not have written this comment here. It seems like your conscience needs to be cleansed or cleared. I hope you give yourself that opportunity.
PS is there any new updates? I can't believe after all this time, and with this new video.
, and after hearing from so many people an arrest seems iiminent - that these animals have not been arrested!! What's going on?

Why was the managers girl friend their at the same time was she vacationing , or new girl friend every cruise or a crime couple?, she could of used the key at that time. I believe that , George got hit on the head to hard with something like a hammer (marks on sheets), then pushed over or wrestled over the balcony.

I just saw the show 48hrs today about George Smith lV gone missing from a cruise ship and I can not believe this case is still being investigated. After watching this show there was one person that stood out more then the other three men and that was the guy who went to jail for trafficking OxyContin. When he was asked why he was in jail he stated for trafficking OxyContin but he continued to say he liked expensive stuff like clothes and things and that trafficking OxyContin was how he could afford a expensive life style. 48hrs reported him stating on video that he was gangster and that how you do it. Do what? Being that the things he said on video with the two other guys just after George went missing is a big red flag. Being that George was wearing a expensive watch and dressed nice, I believe that the guy in jail for trafficking OxyContin tried to take George's watch after he and the other guys put a very intoxicated man in his bed. I think George realized at some point that someone was trying to take his watch and a fight broke out in George's room. George being intoxicated and being out numbered, he lost this fight and Sadly his life. The three Russian Americans that boarded the ship together no a lot more then they are telling, especially the guy that went to jail for trafficking. I hope George's family get the answers to what happened to him and the people who did this get caught and put away for good.
