This evening, I received word from a passenger on board the Viking Sea that the ship had lost power in Malta.
The passenger stated:
"Viking Sea broken down in Malta today August 11th. We were due to sail at 6pm but we are now waiting on a technician who will not arrive

Are cruise ships prepared for the threat of terrorism?
As I have contended for a long time, in my opinion no.
Cruise lines are still calling on dangerous ports. They are still sending passengers on unescorted shore excursions in buses without armed security personnel. Cruise ships can’t prevent terrorists from overpowering their unarmed security guards
Newspapers in Europe are reporting that seventy-seven passengers and crew members were evacuated from a ferry and pier at the port of Joliette, in Marseilles, France after "after loud noises were heard below deck.’
The ferry was identified as the Jean Nicoli which was scheduled to leave for Sardinia this morning.

More than 10 million Americans will set sail on a cruise vacation in 2016. Many of these travelers will book their trips through U.S.-based travel companies—expecting not only top-notch service, but also safety and accountability in the event of an emergency.

The Horizon cruise ship ran aground today in Stavanger, Norway. The Stavanager Aftonblad newspaper reports that the cruise ship became stuck after sailing into the sandbanks near the Norwegian port. Tugs were sent to the scene and and pushed the ship safely into the dock.
The Horizon is owned by Croisieres de France, a subsidiary
The Thomson Celebration suffered an engine failure as the cruise ship was leaving Grand Harbor in Valletta, Malta on Saturday, according to the Times of Malta.
The Maltese newspaper states that the cruise ship “drifted for around 100 metres before the captain was forced to drop anchor in order to avoid hitting the breakwater.”
The U.S. Coast Guard medevaced two cruise ship passengers from NCL’s Norwegian Gem today. The NCL cruise ship was off the Virginia coast at the time of the rescue.

Earlier this week, I received information that Disney Cruises is apparently moving ahead with preliminary plans to build a cruise ship pier on an island in north Eleuthera in the Bahamas, called Egg Island.
Disney already has one private cay in the Bahamas where it unloads thousands of cruise tourists (photo bottom).

A number of newspapers in Bermuda are reporting that four people were injured when a lifeboat fell from the Norwegian Breakaway while the cruise ship was docked at port today.
The Royal Gazette says that one of the crew members is in critical condition at the hospital. This newspaper reports that a lifeboat had fallen

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Royal Caribbean’s Empress of the Seas flunked a surprise sanitation inspection conducted in early June. The Empress of the Seas scored a failing score of only 80. You can read the report here. A score of 85 or lower is considered a failure.
