New details emerged over the tragic passing of Anna Kepner, who died earlier in November aboard the Carnival Horizon. Anna, 18 years old, died by asphyxiation according to a report by ABC News, citing a source briefed on the investigation.
The source stated that Anna had two bruises on her neck sustained from an arm choke. Preliminary reports indicate she did not have alcohol or drugs in her system and she was not sexually assaulted. Full autopsy and toxicology reports have not been released.
To no surprise the FBI declined to comment on ABC News’ report, stating the investigation is ongoing.
Earlier this week, Anna’s ex-boyfriend spoke to local reporters about Anna and her step-brother. He stated that Anna felt uncomfortable around her step-brother and recalled one incident when her step-brother climbed on top of her while the couple were video chatting.
We previously reported that one of Anna’s step-siblings, believed to be her 16 year-old step-brother, may face charges for her death according to a court filing by Anna’s stepmother, Shauntel Kepner.
Additional information has surfaced regarding Anna’s step-brother. Per court documents, her step-brother was hospitalized immediately after the cruise. Furthermore, the child has a psychiatrist appointment early in December. Lastly, the court filings argue that Shauntel Kepner allowed Anna and the other children to drink on the cruise. Her lawyer disputes this.
Even if future details emerge suggesting negligence by Carnival, such as serving minors alcohol, the Death on the High Seas Act (DOHSA) would still shield the cruise line from meaningful liability. Carnival Cruise Line has not made a public statement regarding Anna’s death or the investigation since the news first broke.
The investigation remains active with the FBI, with the autopsy results and any charging decisions yet to be released.
