A cruise passenger was arrested by the police in the Cayman Islands last Wednesday on suspicion of assault and possession of marijuana, according to the press in the Caymans.

The Cayman News Service reported that a 37-year-old man from the United States was arrested on an unidentified cruise ship before being rushed to hospital where he was listed in critical condition. The mysterious case began at 8 A.M. on Wednesday, after the cruise ship moored at the George Town port, when a 911 call was made from the ship to the police.  The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service stated that the man allegedly assaulted a woman he was travelling with during the cruise.  When the police boarded the ship and searched their cabin, they found an “undisclosed quantity of ganja.”

Subsequent to the arrest for assault and possession of marijuana, the cruise guest reportedly experienced an undisclosed medical emergency. His traveling companion was also treated at the hospital for injuries sustained during the assault. After he was released from the hospital, he was charged with assault, resisting arrest and possession of ganja. It is less than clear whether the cruise passenger needed medical treatment for a medical condition related to or coincidental to the arrest.

The newspaper and television reports did not disclose the name of the cruise ship, although the Carnival Vista, Carnival Freedom, and the Liberty of the Seas were in port in the Caymans last Wednesday.
