Bahamas CelebrationWPTV reports that the Bahamas Celebration was forced to return to Freeport after the cruise ship "touched bottom" while leaving port last night.

The Bahamas Celebration sails between the Port of Palm Beach and Freeport.

Although there have been no reports of whether the cruise ship sustained damage, it sounds like there may have been damage to the ship’s hull.  I’m not sure what "touched bottom" means. It may be a nice way of saying that the ship smashed a reef.

Update: The Nassau Tribune reports that the ship sustained a hole in the side of the vessel, and is listing 10 degrees. Initial reports suggested that the ship was in danger of sinking.  Passengers were instructed to wear life preservers.  Photo Credit: Nassau Tribune.

We went to the port to board Friday. No boat, no email to tell us. A guy at the port says there’s no boat, that’s all he knew. GREAT. We book the Baleria ferry for sat out of Lauderdale, nobody offered that info btw. We had taken it the year before.Lucky to get a room due to boat show in Lauderdale. Celebrity refunded our ticket price, and SHOULD refund the cost of the hotel. Total lack of communication!!! Emails should’ve been sent ASAP!!!

Do not believe a word the cruise ship company tells you. It was handled badly from start to finish. I was there. It was HELL

  • Linda Gauck

I was on this cruise and admit to being a little scared. There was chaos, poor communication, no organization. Seemed liked most of the crew did not know what to do. After being on board a ship that had lost power, wearing a life jacket with hoards of panic stricken people, they finally got us off about 5 hours later. They did put us up in a hotel. however there was very little communication. We were bused back to the pier around 11 am only to spend almost the entire day there to get on a different ship. The staff at the celebration were not helpful. and there was no one from the company there to lead us or tell us everything would be ok. I sure do hope I get a full refund for this catastrophe. It was horrific, a nightmare and a terrible inconvenience. the situation was handled poorly. I would not recommend them.

I literally just won a cruise for 6 on this ship. great.

  • susmey ballester

Everything that they said, the help communication, all of it were practically lies. They had us wait even for the lifejackets, the ship was meant to sink in thirteen minutes since it has two doors on the bottom front and back of the ship for cars. The crew had terrible manners, they treated us like cattle, screaming for us to be quiet even cursing at us. Some of the passengers WITH children didnt manage to get a hotel room until 6 AM 4 hours before we had to get the bus back to the port, we had to actually wait 3-4 hours for the ship to come for us because if wasnt there at said time. After that, there were no seats or blankets for the passengers on the new ship. Overall the cruise deserves no stars and all passengers deserve a FULL refund.

I believe that “touched bottom” refers to an offensive touching of a female’s buttock; but I could be mistaken

  • mona blucher

I went on the boat last year and we sat at the port until 10 pm .the crew had no clue what was going on everything they said was a lie.call company up and got more lies.I am not sure if I will go back that boat.it was the worst trip I every spent on cruise boat .would nice for a refunder but that did not happen.

  • Gary Cole

I have been on this cruise several times. I had a great time on every trip. I wish I had been on this haunted cruise. It would have been exciting! Especially on a haunted cruise. What a memory that would have been. Sorry I missed the fun and excitement! Freeport would have been a sucky place to be stuck on though. Thank God for the fast ferry to get everybody home.

Well that’s what happens when you DO NOT have a Bahamian pilot, piloting in his own waters. The passengers should get their money back it’s sad that people want to take things into their own hands, If your going into Russian port a Russian captain or second in command brings the vessel in, when you go to Orlando an American boat captain brings in the vessel so why not let an pilot from Freeport bring in this boat it’s sad but you play with people lives you should suffer the consciences. From all of the 700 islands in the archipelago we are truly sorry they hit some coral reef or something in our waters but hope insurance made sure everyone got home safe and the people continue to travel

  • Judith Key

It’s amazing how they are trying to cover up the truth with this story. The vessel hull was breached when leaving the port, adverse weather and the ship had no pilot onboard. The harbor company and government of The Bahamas allow anything to go on I’m Freeport, no oversight and no standards. Passenger vessel with no pilot onboard hit the side of the Chanel entrance and it’s being brushed under the rug as touching bottom. Real pathetic, real free for all.

  • Darla

they have all these news reports saying it was handled professionally . they are all lies. my husband and i were aboard that ship this past weekend, and let me tell you. even the captains voice was like if he was just as scared as the passengers aboard. they didn’t handle anything neatly. and sure enough they didn’t make it manageable. and to top it, the captain hasn’t even showed his face to apologize to the passengers that was their first cruise. or like me, my birthday, and first cruise. is was horrifying. makes me not want to ever take cruises again.

We showed up for our trip on the Celebration only to be told there was no ship.WE travelled from Nova Scotia for this trip and had no where to go.WE were sitting in a taxi at the port and went back to the rent a car office because we were not given an alternate plan. The taxi cost 90.00. We could have saved this expense if we had been called before going there. This company handled things poorly causing unnecessary expense. We will think twice before using them again.

I like this one about the Bahamas Celebration Ship…. Islander – November 3, 2014 6:51 PM

Does anyone know when the Celebration will be back in Palm beach?

  • Paul

No, and their website doesn’t have any sort of explanation about what has happened and what is being done about it. I talked to a representative today that just said the ship is in dry dock… so who knows when it will be back in service. I hope they do the right thing and compensate all the passengers affected by this terrible ordeal! Overall more accountability by our governments is strongly needed! Agreed?

I had insurance for the trip and have not heard a word from anyone. I also declaired some bahamian beer that I never received. What do I do?

  • Polechik

Does anyone know who the CEO’s name or the best person to forward their complaints too? We also arrived at the port nov 15th to be told there was no boat, and NO ONE bothered to call to inform us, we came in from Canada and drove form new jersey to florida for our honeymoon, was a shit show. Had we known we wuld have cancelled and saved a ton of money we didnt have..

    Dear James Walker,
I do Pastoral Care & Counseling for Soldiers & Family members at Fort Hood, Texas. My Wife & I had an opportunity to take our very 1st Cruise and sorely needed Vacation of our Marriage “the Bahamas Celebration”.
I paid for the Upgrades on Board Ship “Balcony Cabin” $298.oo and Upgrades to the Hotel at Grand Lucayan $90.oo and Excursions on the Island $204.oo not to complain about the $1300 for the Cruise itself that I did not receive due to the accident … the money I spent for these additional things has not been returned … to include the additional money I payed for the Upgrade at the “DBLTree” by Hilton in Palm Beach, FL and the additional money I had to pay for Fuel, Insurance & Parking due to the required drive to Miami because of the Redirected Cruise & the Funds I paid to Carnival Ecstacy.
How do I claim for Reimbursement of lost funds due to the Accident with the Ship ?

Thank You for any Help you can provide in this Case,
in the name of Our Lord Jesus Christ AMEN

We were pulling out of our hotel parking lot in Orlando when one of our travel companions ran out and told us it had ran aground. She just happen to be at the front desk checking out of the hotel when the hotel informed her. No email, No phone call, No NOTHING!

I attempted to contact the Cruiseline but they were closed because of the weekend. Weren’t able to get a hold of them until the following Tuesday and got the run-a-round.

Finally I got a hold of someone who told me we could have gotten on another boat.

Started trying to get our money back since December and still fighting against them.

  • david

Has anyone been able to contact the company about upcoming reservations such as March or April?

    What number did you call?
    What was the outcome?
