Carnival SunshineThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that the Carnival Sunshine is suffering through a gastrointestinal outbreak. This is the fifth GI outbreak of a U.S. based cruise line this year according to the CDC,

The CDC says that 118 of 3,005 (3.93%) of passengers sickened with noro during the cruise in addition to 5 crew members out of 1,142 (0.43%).

As I have mentioned in other recent articles, Carnival cruise lines has reported only three norovirus outbreaks to the CDC for U.S. based cruise since since 2006.  This is to be sharply contrasted with the norovirus outbreaks reported by Carnival owned Princess and HAL which have reported 32 GI outbreaks between them in the last decade.

March 5, 2016 Update: The CDC reported that the number of passengers sickened during the cruise is 173 with 5 crew members also stricken with noro virus.

I am scheduled to board the Carnival Sunshine on Saturday and I am scared! Carnival has sent us passengers an email stating that boarding will begin at 1pm rather than the typical 11am to allow for more cleaning time. I have a pretty wimpy immune system. But this is my first cruise ever, and the first vacation I have spent with my family in over 30 years!

Do I have reason to be concerned, or am I just being a worrywart?

My wife and i just got off the Sunshine three weeks ago and we’re still sick today. I would be very concerned.

I just got off the Sunshine after one of the best cruises ever. The ship staff did everything they could to prevent further spread. They required mandentory hand washing and did away with self serve food and condiments. The staff served all food. Started wiping everything down including casino chips and machines. I continued to WASH my hands I stead of using sanitizing solutions. Tissues were supplied at all public bathroom for opening doors. I would go again but would suggest one continue to keep hands clean. Word was that it was picked up from a port with outbreak that did not disclose to carnival. Carnival would have canceled excursion. Fortunately I did not go on that excursion.

My wife and I just got off the cruise this morning. I had to go to sick bay on other related illnesses yesterday. There might have been 6-10 GI cases. The crew knew what to do and implemented safe food handling for all of us on board. The ones that got sick were the same folks that didn’t wash their hands when they were told too. Great ship and crew. This was our 3rd on the Sunshine. It’s a great ship with a great crew. You’ll love Matt the cruise director
Have fun and don’t worry.

I was on that cruise and I can honestly say that the crew worked around the clock to ensure cleanliness, even as far as washing down the walls. I was traveling with 3 other people and we all came down with a nasty, dry hacking cough on Friday. No virus yet. Keeping our fingers crossed. There is still a window of a chance that we could. There were all kinds of rurmors floating around but we were told by a staff member that it was more likely that someone came on the ship already sick.

Tom,
I was one of the people who ended up I’ll with norovirus….the last 2 days of cruise. Thanks for telling me it was my fault from not washing my hands when told to. The virus takes 2-3 days to manifest itself, and hand washing and food server rules were put in effect 1 day before I became ill.
Before that point, I washed my hands as often as most people. After using the toilet, before going to eat, etc. illnesses like this happen., It certainly wasn’t my fault. Maybe it was no one’s. That’s why the CDC gets involved. To make sure there wasn’t negligence involved, and in any case, to slow or stop the spread.

My husband and I were on the same cruise. We both became ill the last 2 days of the cruise. This is a terrible virus. You seem to feel better then it reverts and you become sick all over again with no energy at all. I had no idea that it was the norovirus. I ended up in the emergency room on Monday, 3/7/16 and after multiple tests I received a call from my doctor today that I tested positive for the norovirus. Measures were put in place by Carnival but I am sure that there were a lot more that 138 people ill on the ship. I work in a hospital so I always use extra precautions and there was nothing that I could have done in this instance that would have made a difference. I am happy to know that the CDC is involved in hopes that corrective measures are implemented to slow down or stop the spread of this nasty virus. I am currently still unable to return to my normal duties due to illness.

Just came off Carnival Sunshine March 13th and guess what it’s still there my brother was locked in his cabin for 2 1/2 days and he was not the only one. We were held up from boarding and by the second day we knew something was up when they came out with spray bottles of hand cleaner with crew forcing hand cleaning at all eating area entrances, first time I ever experienced this in 12 cruises. This ship need to be decommissioned and get a real deep cleaning. Cruising should be fun not worry some.

Omg so sick my husband and I both got off the Sunshine on march 5 th it wound up taking us five days to get home both wound up at emergency care.

Was just on carnival sunshine and the worst experience and severely I’ll from all on ship, respartory and sickness of nausea and pain in my head eyes and fever and body aches, the ship wreaked of sewer and had dripping water and soaking wet carpet all over and repulsive smells all over and they said to compensate me with 15 to 25% off next cruise, this was first with them and last. Please this ship I just checked and passengers were sick from it in February and March 2016 and goes to dry dock may 8th or so and passengers are on it now and there still sailing. Wow so sad honeymoon ruined. And severely ill.
