NCL Gouges Guests with New Charges

Several readers have contacted me complaining about Norwegian Cruise Line's new charges on certain cruise ships (Breakaway and Getaway)

One passenger wrote: "Ncl started (secretly) charging $7.95 for room service now?!?  . . .  enough is enough . . .  So to go up from $0 to $8 is huge. I've never been on a cruise that charges for room service. (Other than the late night charge). This plus the increased gratuities plus increasing the auto gratuities on drinks, it's getting crazy."

NCL Cover Charges Automatic GratuityThis passenger sent me a list of the extra charges, with room services charges, automatic gratuities and so forth together with the cover charges.

A meal for two at the chef Geoffrey Zakarian's fancy Ocean Blue restaurant on the Breakaway with the $39 cover charges (per person) and the 18% automatic gratuity quickly turns into a $92 bill without wine.

Wow. For that price, I'd rather go slumming on the Carnival Triumph and eat pizza for a week.

NCL fans are suggesting that the room service charge is just on a trial basis. We shall see . . .

Booked on the breakaway jan 2016. Tired of the nickel and diming In the end, the only result will be less attentive crew members. NCL think about what you are doing. If you don't l will definitely choose another cruise line. MAYBE THE CHINESE WOUN'T MIND THE EXPENSE !!!

Wow - my first cruise and I am seeing all these extra charges that are really making me rethink an All-Inclusive on land may be better. I don't mind paying an "up-charge" for an upscale restaurant, but for the Ocean Blue $39 per person is too steep for me, especially for a family of 4 - so instead we will not visit that restaurant and try something else like the Moderno which is only $20 pp up-charge..... Also for room service - really???? You don't have an extensive menu to begin with so why charge? That is just plan ridiculous. The gratuities went up as well... I know times change, but if you keep nickel and diming your potential customers there are plenty of other "ships" in the sea that will get our money, time and attention! I would rather pay a bit more in my overall price of the trip rather than having to worry about "extra charges" hitting my bank account all the time. I am really disappointed already and I haven't even gone on the ship yet - not a good way to provide an impression on those potential sailors that haven't sailed before! Where's the Undercover Boss show - management really needs to rethink what they are doing to their customers!

Yes I found the extra gratuity charges very costly to say the least, in addition room cleaning service charges, and to be charged 2.00 for a 5-6 dollar drinks leaves no room to give your own gratuity and not being informed by ship about four passengers being sick and one of whom died on the breakaway we found out from a taxi driver and after research found it to be true

There are 6 couples including myself and my wife , that After reading about all these extra charges, I think we will NOT be booking the Norwegian Breakaway this spring. We were all looking forward to the cruise after the winter, but to pay and then pay again, it's not for us. I will forward these post to all my friends after I verify this with the cruise line
