Royal Caribbean Crew Member Pleads Guilty to Sexual Abuse

A Royal Caribbean crew member pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a cruise passenger last year, according to a New Jersey newspaper.

NJ.com reports that Karan Seechurn of Mauritius, an employee who worked aboard the Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas, pleaded guilty to one count of abusive sexual contact.

In December of last year, crew member Seechurm (a mini-bar attendant) used a master key while he Karan Seechurn Royal Caribbean Cruisewas off-duty to enter a woman's cabin and molested the woman while she was sleeping.

As we wrote last year, it's a dangerous practice to give male cabin attendants or mini-bar attendants a master key to passenger cabins. Prior sexual assaults have occurred on Royal Caribbean ships under similar circumstances. Royal Caribbean touts the Quantum as the most technological advanced cruise ship on the high seas. It's too bad that the cruise line didn't use old school technology and deactivate the master keys and cards to passenger cabins after hours.

The crew member faces up to three years for the sexual abuse charge. The sentence seems quite light. Seechurn tried to prevent the woman from leaving her cabin and threatened her when she awoke.

Many of his co-employees came to his defense on social media last year and posted comments disparaging the victim.

Hello,am from Mauritius too,it is very sad n very shameful to us that 1 of our people act like this, I also work on a cruise line,Ncl,there got a lot of man cabins attendants or even butlers but nothing till now was reported like this n hope never,it is wrong to say that it is a mistake to hand over a master key to male attendants n so on,they shouldn't pay for the mistake of an stupid n sick man,as for this man, 3 years is very very less as now in my country (Mauritius), for rape it is 45 yrs of jail,,u can check it ,no joke,,so no man should dare to rape a woman, even he is from my place, punish him as hard as possible ,coz here we go on board to have a better life ,we leave our family 4 9 long months n because of such insan people may be 1 day haooen that the cruise line stop to trust us,thanks you to give me the opportunity to say something

I worked RCCL and I think as far as a crew member who has a traceable master key and knows that there's lots of cameras and knows this would get him embarassed and fired, specially from Mauritius...this is a vindictive allegation for money...pshtt plz

Have been on 36 cruises and never heard of anything like this (although I'm sure it happens). This should in no way reflect people from that country or the cruise line. He's just a bad apple.

Sex (male) offenders should be chemically castrated and serve long term imprisonment. Recruits in Mauritius are chosen because of their affinity to politicians or the ruling political party rather than merit and good moral standards. The recruiting agent should be sanctioned as proper screening in selecting the right candidate is absent, moreover, he is more interested with his commission than anything else. RC Cruises should make use of the service of qualified professionals rather than amateurs.
