Cruise Critic is reporting that a fire broke out onboard Costa Cruises’ Costa neoClassica in the Red Sea, yesterday. The fire reportedly broke out in the funnel of the cruise ship. Ship personnel extinguished it.

Cruise Critic reported that:

"During the incident no onboard services were stopped and the ship reached its destination port in Aqaba, where it is now berthed. It is not clear whether the cruise — a 25-day Indian Ocean itinerary — Classica Costa will need to be abandoned."

A Costa Cruises statement on the Cruise Hive website says:

"Yesterday at about 9.25pm Italy time a fire has been detected coming out of the funnel on board Costa neoClassica while sailing the Red Sea, destination Aqaba on her planned route to Indian Ocean.

The shipboard personnel promptly intervened and the fire was quickly extinguished. The safety of guests and crew was never put at risk and no injury was reported. As a precaution and as per procedures General Emergency signals have been given and the released shortly thereafter

All ship services have always been working and have never been stopped. The ship reached her destination port in Aqaba and is now berthed. Proper investigations on root causes are in progress and situation is normal.

According to the assessments now being performed, operations of the ship will be modified if needed. The Costa neoClassica has been refurbished in Dec 2014 she can host a total of 1,680 Guests, she is 53,000 gT. The ship is currently performing a 25 days cruise to Indian Ocean."

Two weeks ago, a fire broke out in the engine room of the Costa Luminosa. Passengers notified me that they heard and felt an violent explosion.  You can read about that incident here. It received little publicity. That fire occurred on the same day as the deadly engine room fire on the Oceania Insignia

The Costa neoRomantica sustained a power outage last week.  We wrote about that incident earlier today.

The Costa neoClassica cruise ship (built in 1991) just received a $28,000,000 worth of cosmetic upgrades (new interiors and furnishings, personal coffee pod espresso machines and beauty products).  The Costa neoRomantica had also just come out dry dock. It’s disturbing that Costa is spending tens of millions of dollars on cosmetic appearances on its cruise ships which are then experiencing mechanical issues and fires after coming out of dry dock.

This is the third fire on a cruise ship in the last two weeks.
